Situated next to the ACI Milna reception on the west shore of the bay of Milna, this popular establishment offers a wide range of classic and traditional foods from marinated fish to carpaccio and pasta to steak all prepared on a charcoal grill. It also offers a cafe services and separate lunch and breakfast menus.

In addition it has free wifi and offers a booking system that will secure you a discount on your mooring fee (presumably through the ACI Marina) when booked in advance.
 Our rating is based on two visits, one for coffee and one for breakfast, both of which were great - we have not however tried the main menu.

Cafe Bobice, Split

Everybody has their favourite cafe, one they return to frequently or whenever they are in town. Bobis is a Croatian coffee and cake chain and can be found along the Adriatic coast. As such it is nothing special, perhaps it was the first cafe we came to on our first visit in 2005, perhaps it is well placed at the east end of the Riva, with easy access to Diocletian’s Place (just a few yards to the east is the Bronze Gate), perhaps it was the view it offered of the harbour and Gradska Luka, perhaps it was the display of ice-cream and cakes or... maybe it was that there was a table free (half in the shade half out as we like them to be).

Whatever the reason, out of the multitude of Riva cafes this is the one we return to year on year, to sit and watch the Riva world pass us by while we drink coffee and eat ice-cream. The service is brisk and attentive, prices are fine and the ice-cream is excellent...

But then much the same can be said of many of the Riva cafes!

Pizzeria Galjia, Split

This is back to basics pizza, walking north from Republike Trg you will soon come to this small restaurant on the corner of Matosica. Inside you will be sat at wooden benches while your pizza is prepare in a traditional pizza oven in the corner of the room.

Pizzas are fresh, crispy and great value, service is brisk and cheerful and prices are good. Perhaps the best recommendation is that it is popular with local people too! If you are looking for Pizza, or just a quick meal and excellent value this is THE place in Split to head for.

Restoran Gradska Kavana, Split

Located on the Pjaca (Narodni Trg) in Split’s Old Town, this restaurant jumps out as you as soon as you enter the square. Not only is it the largest establishment in the Pjaca but it simply oozes Edwardian charm. With large external seating areas under awnings as well as an extensive interior of polished wood, glass and brass it does brisk business but at the same time the white shirted waiters always seem to be able to find you a table.

The food ranges from pasta and pizza to more traditional Croatian dishes, sea food and meat. It is well prepared and though nothing particularly startling of high quality and consistent all the same. Prices are more than reasonable for a restaurant located in a major city’s premier tourist square and this mixed with quick, efficient and friendly service make the Kavana well worth trying.

Bistro Star: Jelsa

This smart restaurant and bar is situated right on the water front on the east side of Jelsa Harbour. It is quietly popular and given its location you might expect it to be overpriced. It was however very reasonable during our visit, we chose pizza from the extensive menu and were more than satisfied with the quality of the food. Service was brisk and professional but not unfriendly and when the bill arrived we were pleasantly surprised.

This is one of a number of waterfront establishments offering wide ranging menus for lunch and dinner, the others may all be good too, but this one is definitely worth a look.

Cafe Zadravljak: Vrboska

Vrboska has the usual spread of cafes, bars and small restaurants, something to suit everybody’s taste. Most seem busy and friendly offering the usual range of services including snacks, ice cream and drinks. For ice creams we particularly liked the Zadravljak located at the eastern end of the visiting yacht harbour berths, not only because it was convenient but because of the wide range of flavours available.

Cafe Gaetano: Vrboska

Vrboska has the usual spread of cafes, bars and small restaurants, something to suit everybody’s taste. Most seem busy and friendly, but we particlarly liked this one for coffees, beers and drinks. On the harbour front, just beyond the visiting yacht quay, a mix of umbrellas and sun shades create a shady area surrounded by pots of flowering plant. Friendly service and great coffee completes the picture.

Restoran Trica Gardelin: Vrboska

Located right on the harbour front in Vrboska, on the corner of a small square fronting the harbour, this establishment was busy, and attracted us because it was well attended and also convenient for the harbour. While it serves the usual range of fare however, the quality of the food was not great, the service was surly and the prices seemed steep for what was placed on the table.

While the experience will do, and the food was certainly edible, if there is nothing else open or no other spaces in other establishments, given the wide choice in Vrboska this would be a last resort.

Konoba Luka Gardelin: Vrboska

Situated above the ACI Vrboska Marina on the hill over looking Vrboska Harbour, this excellent restaurant offers the full range of Croatian food from meat through locally caught fish to pizza: something to suit everybody’s tastes. Take the steps from the road behind the marina and climb up to this establishment, or take the road towards Jelsa then turn right (up hill) for a gentler approach - either way it is worth the effort.

The Gardelin is busy, well attended by both yachties and other tourists visiting the town, and seats most patrons on a large covered terrace that during our visit was enclosed in temporary plastic windows due to the inclement weather, but which ordinarily offers a cool and airy spot where food is served in a family atmosphere.

The food is good and service is good and the prices are very reasonable for such a popular establishment. It is worth booking in advance to ensure you will be able to get a table.

Located in Zena Glava, this family run restaurant serves seasonally available organic produce and is very highly rated amongst travel guides. Its one for a hire car or scooter however as it is probably beyond walking distance from Komiza or Vis and is tucked away in the south facing hills on Vis’s southern shore. Amongst other specialities are various home prepared wines and liqueurs prepared and distilled from local produce on the premises.

Restoran Festa, Otok Zut

Walk west from ACI Zut along the shore past olive terraces and south around the corner of the bay and a small harbour and pontoon next to the Kanoba Sandra. Continue south for a further 100 m until you reach the Restoran Festa.

Festa boasts a large terrace area as well as indoor seating festooned with fishing memorabilia and local costumes. Specialising in local fish dishes with fish and crustaceans caught in the bay and cooked in a traditional oven, the restaurant is very popular and it is worth booking in advance to ensure a table.

Open year round the Festa also has some single, double and triple rooms and the proprietor has plans to expand his business into year-round ‘eco-tourism’ and unlike the other establishments on the island, generates some of his power by means of solar energy (as well as by the more usual diesel generator), runs his own water desalination plant to provide his fresh water and treats most of the waste generated by the business on site.

Moorings at a floating pontoon are available free to the Festa’s patrons, small but reasonable charges are made for power and water (see below).

Augusta Insula, Zaklopaticsa, Lastovo

Located in the bay of Zaklopaticsa on the island of Lastovo, Augusta Insula is a busy establishment with its own micro-marina that offers full service (water and electricity) to patrons of the restaurant. Service is excellent and friendly with one of the proprietors on hand to l help you moor against their well appointed pontoon.

Once safely ashore you will be directed up the steps to the restaurant where you can place your order for dinner. While there is an a la carte menu, you are encouraged to choose from one of the specials of the day, which are cooked for your whole crew. Bite the bullet here, its a great way to eat and the quality of the food is excellent. We were offered a choice of Lobster pasta (one of our neighbouring tables had this and reported it to be excellent) or a mixture of fish cooked in the local style, under the bell.

This turned out to be an enormous flat pan of mixed fish including squid, octopus, shrimp and white fish cooked very slowly in white wine on an outdoor fire under a giant ceramic (bell-shaped) cover.

We were pointed to Augusta Insula by a Czech crew we bumped into in Komiza (Vis) who recommended we make Lastovo (at the extreme of range for a weeks cruise either from Split or Dubrovnik) our next stop especially for this restaurant. We returned the next year to do just that and were not disappointed.

Not only is Lastovo spectacular, but the food was beyond excellent and we recommend the Augusta Insula very highly

Konoba Ringo, Uvala Pribinja, Hvar

Located in Uvala Pribinja on Hvar, the Konoba Ringo serves an excellent range of traditional family food with a haut-cuisine twist. The sea food is particularly fine and is generally caught fresh by Jure the proprietor, who bills the fare as ‘what he serves his family’.

One note of caution is that there are no prices on the menus, particularly a concern if you are travelling on a budget. However when we discussed this with Jure he assured us we could always pay what we thought the meal was worth. In any event when the bill came it amounted to little more than 370 kuna for three courses and wine for two of us and seemed like excellent value.

We recommend the Ringo very highly

Konoba Pipo, Uvala Luka, Brac

On the shore of Uvala Luka the Konobo Pipo offers excellent (if basic) local fare, particularly lamb cooked over an open fire. While it might be considered to be on the expensive side it is worth every penny with all ingredients being fresh (and presumably) local. Food is served in the open under a ceiling of vines in sight of the hearth where much of the food is cooked and surrounded by both vines and herb gardens. with distant sounds of the bells of the local sheep tinkling as they wander the shores of Uvala Luka.

There are also rooms to rent, toilets (accessible to those who have paid a mooring fee on a buoy or at the jetty). The fixed concrete jetty in front of the restaurant offers moorings for 5-8 boats with water, but no power.

Bar Katrina, Vis Town

Bar Katarina is located on the west side of Viska Luka bay in the last of the houses before the sports courts and the remains of Greek Issa. It serves good, cheap beer, sandwiches and basic food such as burgers and is a favorite spot of locals and visitors alike.

With friendly service it is particularly handy for those who have been visiting the sites to the west of Vis Town (George III Fort, Issa and the Submarine Pens).

This restaurant is rated very highly by all who have visited it though it is reputed to be expensive. It is in very attractive surroundings situated in the gardens of the Garabaldi Palace between Vis Town and Kut. The tables sit in a lovely walled garden surrounded by plants, flowers and overhung by tall palm trees.

In three visits we have never managed to secure a table without making a wait we were not prepared to make.

Booking in advance is recommended.

Right on the waterfront by the Harbour Wall in Kut, this restaurant serves excellent local sea food at tables and wooden benches, with friendly service, good views over the bay to Vis Town. Can be busy due to the proximity of the yacht moorings and is slightly on the pricey side.

Pizzeria Karijola, Vis Town

Close to the Church of Our Lady in Vis Twon, this restaurant serves primarily pizza, with good music and friendly service. Said to be the best pizzas in the town, they are workman-like rather than excellent. It tables are on a high patio with an excellent view over the road to the bay.

Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Vis Town

Located at the east end of the Vis Town waterfront this bar and restaurant has inside and outside tables. Serving local and international dishes with a front row view of the bay and the water front, the food is always good though without the flare of some of the other restaurants in the town.

The bar also serves drinks and (according to one traveller at least) ‘the best’ decaf coffee in the Adriatic!
