Fortified Church of Sv Marija, Vrboska
Panoramic View, Sites of historic interest: fortified church
The church is entered through a small entrance in the west wall. Internally the cavernous space is simply adorned, though there are a number of ornate marble-inlaid grave covers on the floor of the nave. At the eastern end, to the south of the alter is the entrance to the tower which in turn, by means of a wooden stair provides access to the top of the barrel shaped bastion at the church’s east end. From there you can access the walkways on either side of the church’s roof. These areas provide great views of Vrboska and the surrounding area, including Hvar’s rocky spine to the south.
The entrance to the later bastion is high in the interior wall to the south of the Church’s main door and is unfortunately inaccessible to the public. A view of the interior of this defense can be gained over the parapet on the north side of the church roof at its western end.
Sv Marija is open between 19:30-21:00 daily and there is a charge of 10kn to enter.
Otok Hvar: on the northern shore to the east of Starigrad and the west of Jelsa . Take the side streets from the south side of the harbour up the hill towards the church which stands in a large open square at the top of the hill.
