Hvar: Velo Grablje
Type
Sites of historic interest:15th Century Village, Arts and heritage festival
In the heart of the hilly country to the south of Stari Grad this 15th Century mountain village sits nestled in a long, deep valley will views to the south towards Vis. During our visit in late June there was an arts and heritage festival underway that included gallery displays, music, a heritage crafts market and also access to some of the older more traditional dwellings in the village.
Regardless it is a great place to stop and walk around, to get a feel for rural life in the interior of Croatia, particularly during the lavender boom of the late 19th century.
Access
Velo Grablje is accessed by road either from Hvar Town or Stari Grad. There is no formal parking but space on the verges at the edge of the village before continuing on foot.

Location
Otok Hvar: Take the mountain road from Hvar Town to Stari Grad and once you have passed through Brusje and the Lavender fields, and the abandoned terraces you will see a turn down to the island’s south shore. This is a tight corner. Follow this turn towards the village and park
Alternatively take the modern coastal road along the south shore of the island from Hvar Town towards Stari Grad and just after the village of Milna turn left into the interior. The road winds up the valley past Mala Grablje before reaching Velo Grablje.
